What is a Church Music Institute? It’s generally a one-day retreat centered on a liturgical theme such as a feast, a hymn, or group of hymns accompanied by presentations and workshops to assist the parish in the development of its church musicians and music programs.  Your CMI may be scheduled at any time of the year that is best for your parish, and you are not limited to just one CMI a year.

What is the role of the parish? The parish priest or his designate will give a keynote talk on the year’s liturgical theme.  The parish will offer a light continental breakfast and lunch for the participants, which may be donated by its parish council, its Philoptochos, or the cost offset by donations of the participants.

The Federation Ministry does the rest! We will help with all materials needed for your workshops and registration materials as well as the appropriate facilitators and presenters.  We encourage parishes to open their CMIs to all church musicians in the Metropolis.

To schedule your CMI or ask any questions please contact Ministry Chair Kay Harkins at sfchurchmusic@sanfran.goarch.org

It’s simple and fun for your parish to host your own custom CMI and enrich the growth of your church music programs and musicians.

The GOMSF Church Music Federation Ministry is now offering a modular menu of options to allow you to create a day (or two or more if you desire) of enriching activities and workshops if you would prefer something different from the standard CMI format.  Examples of these options may include:

Basic musicianship and reading of music

English hymns for youth

Vocal techniques for all voices

Chant conducting

Choir conducting

If your parish has a particular need , we will be happy to work with you on that topic.
